Occupational Therapy Assessment
The purpose of an assessment is for the therapist to get to know your child and identify the challenges your child may be experiencing. This helps us prioritise specific areas of your child’s development, set appropriate goals and track progress. All children new to The Children’s Centre (TCC) must receive an assessment to inform treatment goals and priorities.
Our assessments can explore the following areas of development:
– Speech, language and communication development
– Play development
– Sensory-seeking, sensory-avoidance and/or other sensory issues, e.g. constant spinning or touch-avoidance
– Self-care and functional skills, e.g.feeding, toileting and dressing
– Fine motor skills, e.g. handwriting and using utensils
– Gross motor skills, e.g. riding a bike, balancing, sitting
– Visual perceptual skills, e.g.handwriting and other functional tasks
– Organisation and planning, e.g. establish the tasks you need to do, by when and how
Our assessments may consist of the following components:
– Parent/ teacher/ child questionnaires
– Interviews with people familiar with your child, e.g. parents, caregivers, teachers
– Play observations, e.g. how you and your child play together
– Direct interactions with your child
– Informal assessment tasks
– Standardised tests
Assessment findings will be presented in a written report with recommendations for home and school. If appropriate, bespoke, written advice will be provided to contribute to the remediation of the areas of difficulty identified.
